What makes a town really lovely and fascinating, is the quaint irregularity which links it to its geographical location -- the suggestions of hill and dale, river and shore -- and to the continuous history of its inhabitants -- the marks of original settlement, slow expansion, and development in channels and directions determined by the topography of the site and aspirations and genius of the people.
